Senior Beacon of Greater Washington, Inc., is a family-owned business dedicated to providing information and services to active seniors and their families living in - or moving to - the Greater Washington, D.C. and Greater Baltimore areas.
Founded in 1989 by Stuart Rosenthal and his wife, Judy, the company began by publishing the monthly Beacon newspaper. This free, community publication is dedicated to providing well-written, useful information on a wide variety of topics of particular interest to people over 50.
The Beacon Newspapers
For many years, the Beacon newspapers have swept the top journalistic awards of the North American Mature Publishers Association while also earning Gold, Silver and Bronze Mature Media Awards.
But we are most proud of our growth in readership over the years. Our two editions now total more than 150,000 copies each month, distributed free via more than 1,800 local distribution sites. We also mail more than 2,500 copies a month, many to subscribers living throughout the United States.
Our Advertisers
As a free publication, the Beacon's extensive distribution is supported through advertising. Many readers tell us our wide-ranging mix of advertisements are as useful to them as our high-quality articles.
Our advertisers include an extensive list of retirement communities and other housing options, as well as health providers, medical and legal professionals, financial advisers, retail services, theatres, travel agencies, employers and more.
Our classified advertising section serves readers who wish to buy or sell products and services through inexpensive ads, or to meet others with similar interests through "personals."
Resource Guide
Since 1994, we have also published the Montgomery County Seniors' Resource Guide a comprehensive telephone directory of more than 700 agencies serving residents of Montgomery County, MD.
This highly-respected and essential resource is published in partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Health & Human Services. It is distributed free of charge through the support of local advertisers.
To search the Guide, by topic or listing, click on this link Resource Guide, or the graphic of the guide at the top of the page.
Community Events
We also produce the Beacon InfoExpo an annual community-education event currently offered in Washington's Maryland and Virginia suburbs.
These programs attract thousands of visitors to view exhibits from government agencies, non-profit organizations, employers and local businesses; to hear experts speak on a variety of subjects; to obtain computer education, and simply to have a good time.
Our InfoExpos are geared to those interested in learning more about the multitude of products and services available to enhance the lives of local seniors, including family members, professionals who work with seniors and business representatives.
In addition, the Beacon regularly sponsors, co-sponsors or supports other community programs, often in partnership with local Area Agencies on Aging and non-profit organizations. These include the Path of Achievement Awards, Law Day, Senior Leadership Montgomery, the Older Worker Expo, the Way to Go Travel Show, and many other programs and events.

About the Publisher
Stuart Rosenthal has been publisher and editor of the Beacon newspaper since he and his wife established the publication in 1989.
Prior to founding the paper, he worked as a tax attorney in the Washington, D.C. office of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, a law firm he joined after a stint in the federal government as Special Assistant to the General Counsel of the Commerce Department.
In addition to his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, Rosenthal is a graduate of Yale Law School and Oxford University, which he attended on a Marshall Fellowship.
As part of his commitment to the seniors of the Washington area, Rosenthal has been active on numerous boards and committees of senior organizations for many years. He is currently a board member of the Maryland Aging and Disability Resource Center Advisory Board and the Baltimore County Provider Council.
In addition, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley recently selected Rosenthal to chair the Maryland Commission on Aging, which advises the Governor and Maryland's Department of Aging on senior issues.
