Mid-century design lovers don’t have to wait until Modernism Week for a fix. A Fall Preview over the Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 9 to 12, will feature a selection of the best events from the annual February festival.

“This October weekend event has been designed to provide a preview of our 11-day festival in February,” says Lisa Vossler Smith, executive director of Modernism Week.  “We hope it will be enjoyed by visitors and desert residents alike.”

Modernism Week, which drew more than 45,000 fans in 2015, celebrates mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion, and culture. It features more than 100 events including the Modernism Show, home tours, films, lectures, double-decker bus tours, parties, walking and bike tours, a pre-fab showcase, vintage fashion, live music events, a vintage travel trailer exhibition, and more.

New tour locations

While most events are centered in Palm Springs, Modernism Week expands its reach each year to other sites in the Coachella Valley.

For the first time, the Fall Preview will include tours of Sunnylands, Charles Phoenix bus tours and a One-PS Neighborhood tour. Also on the menu: tours of Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate and Frey House II and walking tours of historical Palm Springs.

With more than 60 events planned, highlights during the four-day preview schedule include an opening night preview reception at the Modernism Show & Sale — Fall Edition at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Other activities include a Palm Springs neighborhood home tour; the Palm Springs Art Museum’s “Meet the A+D Center — The Rat Pack Experience” party; architectural walking tours; Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, a cocktail reception in support of Albert Frey’s Aluminaire House, the  “Lost, Saved and Endangered” lecture and tour; and more.

The Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Air Museum will feature 40 national and international dealers offering furniture, decorative and fine arts representing all design movements of the 20th century, and introducing 21st century items. Additional activities include a Classic Car Show, book signings and other special events throughout the weekend.
