The sound of music
I grew up in a house where the soundtrack of daily life was Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven played on the kitchen radio tuned to the classical music station. While my tastes as a teen ran more to the Rolling Stones and Cat Stevens, today my car radio is often tuned to the classical music on WETA, and my iPod contains Bach, along with Bruce Springstein.
I’ve found that a number of boomers like me who either turned away from classical music after a disastrous series of piano lessons or who decided it just wasn’t cool to like Liszt as kid have embraced classical music as adults.
For those of us who love classical music, the Washington and Baltimore areas have a wealth of opportunities to enjoy — and play — it. Our November cover story looks at the Piano Society of Greater Washington, a group of accomplished amateur musicians who offer quarterly concerts. The next will be on Dec. 11.
Look in our Beacon Bits and our online events calendar, updated daily, for other are opportunities to attend musical performances. For example, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra will perform a children’s holiday concert on Dec. 11. For details, see http://alexsym.org.
The Friday Morning Music Club has numerous concerts each month, including one on Dec. 1 at the Mansion at Strathmore in Bethesda. And the Towson University Symphony Orchestra plays Tchaikovsky and Dvorak on Nov. 21.
