New 55+ apartments open

A new, modern apartment building for people 55 and older is now open in Dumfries, Virginia.

Located near Potomac Mills, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center and Leesylvania State Park, The Harbor at Quantico Creek has affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments available for rent. Each unit has its own washer and dryer. The building has a fitness center, yoga room, lounge and even an indoor pet-washing station.

“It’s absolutely beautiful. It sits up on a hillside, surrounded by nature,” said Jennifer Long, community manager at The Harbor at Quantico Creek, adding that it’s “just minutes away from the town of Dumfries.”

Special pricing is available on some residences at The Harbor at Quantico Creek, Long noted.

Palliative care center to reopen

A 106-year-old grammar school in Arlington, Virginia, is being renovated as a state-of-the-art palliative care center.

“Over time we’ve cared for people who went to school there. Talk about the full circle,” said Steve Cone, chief of communications, marketing and philanthropy at Capital Caring Health, which leases the building from Arlington County.

Capital Caring Health has operated a hospice inpatient facility in the building since 1982 — one of the first in the country. After the renovation, it will rename the building the Guernsey Center for Caring, after David and Diane Guernsey, whose donation facilitated the project.

In the past decade, 800 inpatient palliative care facilities have closed in America, leaving 6,500 remaining. Capital Caring Health operates three in the D.C. area: The Adler Center in Loudoun County, one at Sibley Memorial Hospital in D.C., and the seven-suite center in Arlington, which will reopen early next year.

“For people at the end of life who need round-the-clock hospice care, it’s so important that these facilities are available,” said Cone, adding that donations are key.

Located at 4715 15th Street North in Arlington, the Guernsey Center for Caring is scheduled to open by Feb. 1. For more information, call (703) 712-4680.
