Senior discounts start as young as age 50
One of the best aspects of turning 50 is the growing number of senior discounts that become more and more available as one gets older. Many are available simply with proof of age and do not require membership in any organization, such as AARP. However, many are not widely promoted, so older adults may not know about them.
Louise Ross, publications coordinator for the Joslyn Center, maintains an extensive list of local discounts available to Coachella Valley residents 50 and older.
Dozens of restaurants, retailers, grocery stores, airlines, rental car agencies, hotels, theaters, attractions, fitness centers, cell phone providers and salons appear on the list along with the amount of each discount and its age requirement.
Most discounts range from 5 to 25 percent, with minimum age requirements from 50 to 65.
A partial list is published periodically in Joslyn’s monthly newsletter, which is
also posted online. View page 8 at joslynlist for the most recent listing. The full list is available for perusing on the bulletin board in the lobby of the center at 73750 Catalina Way, Palm Desert.
More than 250,000 listings from all across the U.S. can be found at www.seniordiscounts.com. Features on the site allow searches to be customized by state, city or zip code, mileage range, category, age requirement and whether discounts are available locally or nationally. The site is a handy reference for both stay-at-homes and travelers.
Because many businesses do not actively promote their senior discounts, older adults are advised to research those available to them before they shop, dine, travel, etc., and to be prepared to ask for the discount at the time of purchase.
